Status on the update to Godot

It’s been a long time since the last update, sorry about that. Here’s some screenshots of what I’ve been working on:

Main menu will show trending mods at the bottom and players can scroll down to see more. (Menu buttons will change)

Collection. (layout hasn't changed)

Card editor.

Design editor.

Rules editor.

Big new features and changes in the godot version.

  • UI overhaul.
  • A mod.io account will no longer be needed to play/download mods, players still have to accept terms, and mod publishing still needs an account. This removes a big barrier for players to play mods as login is no longer needed.
  • Godot enables support for more image types: svg, bmp, jpg, tga, webp. Embedding images in text. And I removed the image size limit.
  • Lots of many more smaller quality of life features. I.e. Reorder/move abilities, challenges and design nodes with drag & drop.

And now, let's be real.

The update will not come out this year. Yeah, it was naive of me to think I could convert years of work into a new engine in a few months, and I made it worse by adding more features. Progress was fast at first, then became slower and slower. I think I'm slowly burning myself out by working on the same thing over and over without releasing anything, so I’m going to take a Christmas break and try to reset a bit.

This project initially started because I wanted to try releasing a small CCG and see how it goes, but it evolved into a kind of card game platform/simulator/sandbox. That is much more exciting, but on the other hand, the scope changed into a gigantic project without really thinking it through properly.

I cannot keep this as my main focus without it being sustainable, you need money to live. And realistically the update is probably still months away, even after the update, I still think it needs a lot of polish before it will be in a state where it could become more sustainable.

Next year I'm going to try having multiple projects I can switch between, so I will work on both Cardeneer and a few smaller games. Hopefully this will allow me to avoid burn out, and I want to try releasing a few smaller games to see how that goes. If that doesn't work out, I’ll have to look for freelance work or maybe a part-time job.

Thank you for sticking around despite all the delays.

TLDR: update delayed, taking a break, will also work on more projects, sorry and thank you for sticking around.
